Princess Leia

Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi; you're my only hope.

Obi Wan Kenobi and Princess Leia

Thought it was time I made an amigurumi for myself and Princess Leia Organa it was! It does appear Princess Leia is a little chubby (or maybe curvy?) but I think she’s cute like that. I was quite looking forward to making her because of her hair.

Princess Leia

Did some research on amigurumi hair and I adapted the hair tutorial from Geek Central Station but instead of embroidery thread, I used roving wool. I originally wanted to use the roving wool idea for Obi Wan’s hair but then realised I didn’t have white wool. I didn’t really photograph the process so I will try to describe how I made her hair.

Princess Leia

Basically grabbed some roving wool - with the sewing machine sewed a line down the middle to create her hair parting. On the underside of her wig I applied a thin line of PVA glue on her parting, and pinned on the line of her parting on her head and left it alone for a few minutes for the glue to bond to her head. Still with the pins stuck on I added a little more glue to her undersides of her hair and using a hair tie, wrap her hair down the sides of her face - and yes it might appear I am killing her with my hair tie. This will hold the hair in place. After 15 minutes of “strangling” Princess Leia, remove the hair tie and braid both sides and twirl it into a bun - sew in place and leave alone overnight for the glue to completely dry. Remove pins in her head the next morning. Glue should dry clear.

Congratulations! You made made amigurumi hair! I haven’t tried this with short hair yet but I should think it’s just as easy and you can really do alot with roving wool for hair.

On another note, if you like my Princess Leia as much as I do, you can download a desktop wallpaper of her here.
